The spaceship begins at velocity=0 at time=0 at a distance_from_the_other_planet=0.

The spaceship accelerates at "a" meters per second toward Earth.

(Actually, it accelerates in the direction where Earth will be when it arrives, but that's another trivial detail.)

The difference in time t₁−t₀is selected to be small enough that v₁−v₀ is so small, compared with the speed of light, that you don't need to use relativistic equations.

v₁−v₀= a (t₁−t₀)

v₂−v₁= a (t₂−t₁)

v₃−v₂= a (t₃−t₂)
